Las Vegas was founded on May 15, 1905. It began as a stopover for pioneer trails to the west but quickly became a popular railroad town. During the next few years America lost interest in Las Vegas and it became much less important. This all changed when the Hoover Dam was completed in 1935. The completion caused a growth in both tourism and population. Although the Hoover Dam had an impact, it was the legalization of gambling in 1931 that laid the groundwork for one of the most exciting cities on the planet to reach its potential.
In the 1940s and ’50s, organized crime took over and controlled almost all of the casinos and hotels, they also provided street muscle and owned most of the income. Despite this widespread range of crime, many stars such as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Andy Williams, Liberace, Bing Crosby, Carol Channing and countless others began to do shows there regularly.
This new and exciting source of entertainment caused over eight million people to visit Las Vegas by 1954. These tourists were providing the casinos with over 200-million dollars which only caused the organized crime to grow. Organized crime continued until the father of the American aviation industry, Howard Hughes, came to the city. He spent over 300-million dollars buying hotels which stopped most of the crime.
Hughes quickly became one of the most powerful men in Las Vegas. Throughout the years, Las Vegas has done nothing but increase in population and tourism. The funny thing about Las Vegas is that it’s most famous and popular spot is not even in the city itself. I’m talking of course about the legendary Las Vegas Strip. It is located four miles outside of the city and its one of the most scenic places in the world. A fun fact about the strip is that it’s home to 15 of the top 25 largest hotels in Las Vegas. When combined these hotels total over 62,000 rooms!
Las Vegas is probably one of the most exciting places in the world. Its world class attractions include everything from casinos, hotels, golf courses, restaurants, and much more. One of the coolest aspects of Las Vegas is the aurora it gives off. In Vegas, you can be whoever you want and the city promotes it. Its famous tagline, “What happen in Vegas, Stays in Vegas” has taken the nation by storm and has earned Las Vegas the “City of Sin” nickname. Las Vegas is one of the most famous cities in the world and it should be experienced at least once. It’s up to you to plan your vacation and have you and your friends screaming, “VEGAS BABY, VEGAS”.
