An island a little under 450-miles east from the coast of Madagascar, Réunion Island possesses a volcanic, rainforest-covered interior, surrounded by a gorgeous coastline and nearby coral reefs. Calling it remote would be an understatement, as this French overseas department is in the heart of the Indian Ocean, yet it boasts a surprising population of about 850,000-plus people. From the diverse wildlife, to the welcoming locals and multitude of activities, including world-class SCUBA diving, the island is a tourism hotbed, with tourists propelling the island to the highest GDP in the Indian Ocean.

Being so isolated geographically, it’s easy to believe the indigenous people live secluded lifestyles, but that couldn’t be more false. It’s an island that’s enjoyed a blossoming culture that continues to evolve and thrive, one that enjoys a wide-range of athletics, producing professional footballers, as well as original music.

In line with the athletic side of things, skateboarders Rémy Taveira, Yann Horowitz, Barney Page and TJ Rogers partnered with Red Bull to shred the island’s streets, discussing the island’s vibe, beauty and the local’s reception to their skateboarding. The first two chapters of their multi-part series are embedded below. We’ll let them take it away from here.
